Newsletter Issue 228

Hello,

The sad news first – a former member (until recently when he had to give up due to ill health), Tony Maisey has died. I have no other details unfortunately.

Tony played in a few teams, one of which I took over when Bryan Mayell stood down on a Friday afternoon. Tony was an accomplished thespian who continued to act until poor health forced him to stop. Our sincere condolences to his wife, Elisabeth and his family and friends.

It was a very early start for us yesterday morning. We were up at 5.30 in order to shower, etc. and allow for “Air Balloon” traffic so that we could be at the Co-op in Brockworth for 7.45. The coach left on time at 8.00 with everyone who’d signed up on board and we arrived at Tamworth IBC at 9.30.

First port of call was the cafe for a warming cup of tea/coffee and some people had breakfast. The game started at 10.30. We got off to a good start but Nottingham soon found their feet on what looked like a very speedy green.

There was some very impressive bowling from both sides but two of the rinks were well and truly up against it with the Nottingham skips Les Gillett and Simon Skelton who were able to turn almost anything around. However, towards the end we were coming back and, had there been a few more ends, we may well have done it. We lost by just 13 shots with one end to go on one rink.

To have reached the quarter final of the Denny Cup is something to be very proud of. Our club is certainly getting well known particularly for the number of young players we have. Nottingham have just one player under 25 and, speaking to the reserve for Nottingham, he couldn’t believe how well our youngsters play. He was very envious and said that is what their club lacks – up and coming talent. We are very fortunate and not only do we have young lads but we have four  young ladies on the up too!

Here are a few shots of the day but what you can’t appreciate is how cold it was and the noise, mainly from the Nottingham guys shouting very aggressively at their woods as if it has any influence on them!!!

I managed to get shots of both Les Gillett and Simon Skelton so you should be able to spot them.

We have more area finals coming up:

Louie and Josh Hodges are in the Family Pairs on 20th Feb at Bromsgrove at 6.30

Dylan and Lee Williamson are in the Open Pairs

Dylan is in the Novice Singles and

Tom Evans is in the Singles

The location and date of the last three is yet to be confirmed.

Congratulations to all of you – the Denny players and national area finalists.

Thank you too to our very able driver, Naomi Carter and to all those who came to support.

MidGlos is hosting the Men’s Trips Area Final on Tuesday, 25th February at 6.30p.m. This should be a good match to watch and good for the club since they each have to pay rink fees of £5.00 which helps.

I need to remind some of our members who belong to outdoor clubs too that the wearing of your outdoor club shirt at MidGlos is not acceptable. I’m sure if it were the other way round, it would be frowned upon too.

Our quiz nights are very popular, so much so that some of our members are missing out on being able to come. Can we ask that, if you have fewer than six in your team, you are prepared for others to join you to make it up to six. This way, we can accommodate more people but, for health and safety reasons, we cannot increase the number of tables from 20.

Our next quiz is on 22nd February when I am away meaning that there won’t be a newsletter that week.

Kath “mail chimps” my newsletters to you but don’t forget that you can access all the newsletters on the website. Our webmaster, Gavin Argent usually posts them soon after 9.00a.m. on Mondays.

Our Wessex B team were playing Carterton this morning at 10.00 and Wessex A are playing Cotswold A on 23rd Feb. This afternoon was a friendly against Cotswold IBC at home. 🤞it went better than last week against Welford.

Have a good week and take care,

Linda.
