This is the last newsletter for 2024.
Last week, I posted the sad news about Allan Tansley. His funeral will be held at 13.30 at Gloucester Crematorium and afterwards at the club. Everyone is welcome.
On a lighter note, I hope you had a good Christmas and haven’t overindulged too much. The weather certainly wasn’t very Christmassy but today the sun is shining, snowdrops and primroses are in bloom and the daffodils are emerging.
Going back to 22nd December, Gloucestershire and Somerset U18s we’re playing each other. Unfortunately Howard and I weren’t able to support but I’m delighted to announce that Gloucestershire won by 36 shots. Well done to all involved.
The next round of the Mason’s was due to be played this coming Friday, 3rd January between MidGlos and Oxford City and County. The latter can’t get a team so we have a walkover to the next round – not the way we’d like to do it but needs must. Obviously we won’t know our opponents until that game is played on Friday.
On Saturday, 4th January, our men are playing the area semi-final against Kingsthorpe, Northampton at 10.00 a.m. That should be a good game to watch – two rinks at home and two away.
The club competitions are well underway. Please keep checking the competitions board and make sure that you play your games before the play by date. If your name appears at the top, you are the challenger and it is up to you to offer two or three dates to the opponent and then, when agreed, hopefully book a rink with reception.
Can I remind you that you should not roll up immediately prior to a competition or a league game. This gives an unfair advantage against the other player/team (how the green is running). There have been complaints of people doing this.
There are also many of the rules of etiquette being forgotten/ignored – e.g. not walking down the middle of the rink as opposed to behaving like a herd of cattle, calling for a wick, clapping a wick, willing a travelling wood to miss, etc. Apart from walking down the middle of the rink, all the others should go on in your head, not be voiced. We all have a tendency to do it at times but it is frowned upon.
Sorry about the last bit but members keep asking me to remind folks in the newsletters so there we are right at the end of the year so that we can make a fresh start in the new year.
And, on that note, may I wish you all a Happy and Healthy New Year.
Linda.
