Newsletter Issue 218

Hello everyone,

Just one month to go ( I’m sure the little ones are counting down the sleeps until he arrives ).

The Christmas lights were turned on in Cheltenham yesterday (Saturday). Several choirs (including ours) were meant to be singing outside!!! Fortunately, the organisers managed to house everybody in different indoor venues. We’re in Cirencester next Saturday but we are inside in the big St. John the Baptist Church and on the big screen outside if you fancy a trip. It really is a lovely start to the festive season.

Whilst on the subject of Christmas, many members, including ourselves have decided to wish everyone in the club a very happy Christmas and new year in person and not give Christmas cards. Obviously it is entirely up to you but it’s our way of helping to save the planet and instead we will give to charity.

Unfortunately MidGlos came second last week at Welford, however we were due to be at home against Newport today where we would have had the home advantage but, due to the awful weather, Newport had to cancel.

Wessex A and B are playing Cotswold B and A respectively this morning.

This match clashes with our U30s playing away against Wellingborough at Banbury and the open singles at Solihull so we’ve lost our strong young players. Let’s hope that “the oldies” can pull it off🤞

Our A team “oldies” (they’re not all old but much older than some of our youngsters)most definitely did pull it off. It’s fair to say we trounced them. However, our B team didn’t do quite so well. One of the home teams nearly did it but lost by two shots in the end. Well played everyone.

Don’t forget that Jack will be here next Sunday, 1st December with Potters shop – 11.00 until 3.00. A great chance to buy Christmas presents or to treat yourself. I guess if your partner isn’t a bowler, they wouldn’t be too chuffed with some bowling gear?!

This is open to anyone. You don’t have to be a member. Jack will be in the Cooper Suite.

Also, on 1st, Wessex A is playing Chipping Norton and Wessex B is against Fairford at 10.00a.m. In the afternoon MidGlos was due to play Bristol at 2.00p.m. but they too have cancelled this morning since they can’t get a team together. If you were due to play, don’t despair because Roger Fry has offered to run a fun bowls afternoon instead. In addition, there will be bacon or sausage baps on sale. Do come along.

Our website is finally up and up to date thanks to our new website manager, Gavin Argent. Many thanks.

Our open week-end in September was really successful in attracting new members. It’s been very busy for our coaching team but I’m delighted to announce that we have gained 40plus new members – brilliant news!

Just watched the final in the open singles between our very own Finlay Williamson and Sam Tolchard. Unfortunately Finlay didn’t quite make it but he did tremendously well to get to the final and play a former No.16 in the world. Sam has a few years on Fin and I’m sure that one day in the not too distant future we’ll see Fin at World Bowls. Well done, Fin and to Dylan and Lee who were also playing at Solihull at the week-end.

Dylan came up against Les Gillett and lost by one shot in the tie break. Another stirling performance!

Another update – our U30s won overall by 2 shots. Well done everyone. The next round is in the new year.

We’re SO privileged to have such talent in our club. Really proud of all of you!

Take care. Hopefully Storm Bert will have subsided by the time you read this.

Linda.
