Hello,
Another week, another newsletter and sadly, another death.
Joan Surman, a long-standing member of MidGlos indoors and Cheltenham outdoors sadly died on Friday. She had had a few health issues recently but this final one proved to be too much.
She had been a very active member of the club in the past but, more recently, she just concentrated on her bowling. She was an excellent lead, both indoors and outdoors, competing in internal leagues and national competitions where she was very successful. She was always full of life and ready for a laugh. She will be sadly missed. Our thoughts are with her family of whom she talked very fondly and her many friends.
It has been another busy week at the club with several competition matches being played just in time for the first of the finals days to take place on Sunday, 2nd April. The last one is on Saturday, 8th April. The order of play is yet to be announced but, I believe, both days will commence at 9.00a.m. with the last game starting at 3.00p.m. Good luck to everyone involved and thank you to all those who have played and been knocked out along the way.
Tom Evans was up in Nottingham in the week where he was playing in the men’s finals. Unfortunately, he lost but it is a marvellous achievement to get that far and he has many more years to try again. Well done, Tom and good luck in the future.
On Sunday, 2nd April, Josh Hodges is also at Nottingham playing in the under 18s singles finals. Good luck, Josh. We’re all gunning for you.
And, on 15th April, our men are competing in the Denny Plate Final against Cumbria. The name of MidGlos is certainly being heard out there in the bowling world and so it should. We’ve got some great bowlers. Spread the word. MidGlos is a great club.
On Friday, we had a touring team from Essex playing a friendly against us. MidGlos was struggling in the first half but the tea, coffee and biscuits fortified us sufficiently to catch up and overtake. Anne Hesling’s rink did particularly well. I felt sorry for the opposing team but I soon got over it. It was a very enjoyable afternoon and the Essex team were very impressed by our facilities.
The AGM papers are now ready to be collected from the boxes at reception. Please pick up yours. It will save us a lot in postage costs or mileage if they have to be hand delivered. If you have any questions arising from the contents of the pack, please follow the instructions within. Early this week, there will be instructions for how you can vote electronically if you’d rather not venture out at night.
Yesterday the last friendly of the season was played against Malvern with MidGlos eventually winning 96/77. During the whole season, there have been only three defeats. Well done MidGlos and to all who joined in. Not only has it been a successful season but everyone has enjoyed themselves too. Well done John Doody for organising the whole programme and to everyone else who’s helped in the smooth running of the matches.
Our presentation evening this year will be held on Friday, 14th April at 7.00p.m. Not only will the bar be open, but there will be a free buffet too so, come along and enjoy the evening.
Now that it’s summertime, let’s enjoy the lovely warm sun – I wish.
Take care,
Linda

Very sorry to hear the sad news about Joan, she has been very unwell for a while she was a wonderful bowler I think possibly the best lead player at MidGlos. Well respected here and at Cheltenham Bowls Club her outdoor Club.
