Hello everyone at this sad time,
For the majority of us, Queen Elizabeth II was the only Sovereign we’ve ever known. Although we knew her days were numbered, it has still come as a shock to the Nation.
As a mark of respect, we will of course, be closing the club on 19th September, the day of the funeral.
Our winter season will therefore be delayed by a day. The scheduled Monday morning games are to be played on 2nd January 2023 instead. I believe that, since there is an equal number of teams on a Monday afternoon and evening, those games will be cancelled. By rearranging in this way, it causes the least amount of extra work necessary for rescheduling.
Again, provided the information on the notice board is accurate, the following members are still seeking teams:
Those whose names appeared in last week’s newsletter (available on the website) and, in addition:
Peter Foster on a Friday afternoon – 01452 531074
Bob Argus on a Wednesday morning – 01452 619700
(Graham Whiting is now sorted)
Grasshoppers is the only team now wanting players on a Monday morning. Contact Bob Knight on 01242 228056
AUSTRALIAN PAIRS
A number of us played this in the summer. We all really enjoyed it and found it a very useful exercise.
It is played with four woods. The first of the pair bowls his/her two woods in the same way that the leads would normally. The two “leads” then go down to the head while the two “skips” come up to the start and bowl their four woods. The original “leads” then come up to the start while the original “skips” go down to the head. The “leads” then bowl their remaining two woods.
On the next end the whole process is reversed i.e. the original “skips” now become the “leads” and vice versa.
We would like to offer this on a Wednesday afternoon in the winter when we would need a minimum number of six teams of four.
If you would like to form a team of four, please submit your names to reception. Provided there is sufficient interest, each team would be allocated the name of an Australian animal or bird e.g. Koalas, Kangaroos, Wallabies, etc.
On Saturday a few of us went to Leamington to watch Gloucestershire men playing the semi-finals of the Middleton Cup. Unfortunately, they were knocked out by Hertfordshire. In the afternoon, the ladies were in action playing the quarter finals of the senior ladies’ fours. They were very unlucky to lose on an extra end to Wiltshire. Well done to all who took part.
For us, it was a really good day out where we met quite few other MidGlos members.
I think I’ve remembered everything. Don’t forget the quiz on 17th and that we’re closed on 19th but back to normal on 20th for the first day of our winter season.
Take care,
Linda.
