Hello again,
My bowling really should be improving – I’ve played so many shots at World Bowls from the comfort of my armchair. There have been some wonderful matches and two players from Solihull are still in it – Emily Kernick and Tom Holmes. Well done and good luck to both of them. Coverage on the BBC begins tomorrow so we’ll get lots of shots of the ceiling lights and close-ups of the trophies – most useful!
You will be aware that Roger Fry extended the sign up date for entry into the competitions. Disappointingly, it didn’t really have much effect. Quite a few comps cannot be played this year due to insufficient entries. What a shame.
The extension means that it is now very important that we keep to the “Play by” dates on the competition board.
There are 24 games in January, 14 of which could be played in the day. There may be an opportunity to play on a Sunday morning. Please check with Vince and book a rink.
In February, 43 games need to be played and in March, 24 games.
The club will be running a Markers Course on Saturday, 11th April from 9.30 to 4.30.
The course will be presented by three Senior Umpires – Martin Johnson, Ed Poole and Jamie Campbell. On the course you will learn about the laws of the sport relating to marking in a fun quiz interactive way as well as tips and tricks for marking and finding out about those obscure bowls laws that you were never quite sure about.
Bookings are now being taken and your place can be confirmed by completing the form on the club noticeboard, by contacting reception or by emailing the course organiser – mej123@gmail.com
Please note that places are limited so if you are interested in attending, please book asap. The course was oversubscribed last year and will be advertised externally in two weeks’ time.
In the meantime, if you have any questions about the course, please contact Dave Giles.
Whilst on the subject of Dave Giles, May I take the opportunity of thanking him for organising and running another successful open day.
Over 20 people visited with 14 of them wanting coaching. Dave thinks that we should gain at least 12 new members. A brilliant result! Well worth doing yet again.
Thanks also go to the volunteers who came along and helped in any way. Some people took advantage of the club being open and came along for a free roll up so filling out the rinks and making the club look busy all day.
The club was busy again in the evening since it was our monthly quiz night, this time devised by Chris Carter and delivered by Lin Brighty who had to contend with a very temperamental microphone.
Next month’s quiz will be hosted by Jill and Graham Whiting.
Today our Wessex A team were playing Carterton and our B team were against Chipping Norton. Our A team beat Carterton 84/67. Well done MidGlos but our B team lost heavily to Chipping Norton.
Next Sunday, A plays Cotswold B and our B team plays Cotswold A.
This afternoon MidGlos were playing Cheltenham. At the time of writing, I haven’t heard the results.
On Sunday, 25th January (i.e. this coming Sunday) we are holding a sort of Burns Night – fun bowling from 3.00p.m. to 5.00p.m. followed by a “Scottish” quiz followed by a two-course meal (haggis is an option but not mandatory). There are tickets still available but, if you intend eating, we must have numbers by Wednesday ideally. Thursday is the absolute deadline. Scottish-themed dress is encouraged but again, not mandatory.
Don’t forget to get your competitions organised and played.
Until next week, take care,
Linda.
Linda Watkin-Jones.
