Newsletter Issue 99

Hello,

I’m nearly there – one more newsletter to go to get to the 100! I first started this little project in order to keep folks believing that there would indeed be life after Covid back at the club. I, for one, found the lockdowns and subsequent restrictions very difficult and I believe I was not alone in feeling isolated and cut off from all that we’d come to take for granted. I do hope that my regular writings helped, particularly those of you who live alone.

To follow up on the local national gardens event last week-end when we provided the refreshments, we made a profit of £251.50. This made it well worth doing. However, we wouldn’t have made anything like that amount without the generosity of the people (mainly ladies) who made and donated the cakes free of charge. Many thanks again.

Well, did you watch “DIY SOS” on Tuesday? What a tragic family and what a transformation of their property! Their difficult lives will now be much more bearable thanks again to the generosity of different businesses and the hard work of all the volunteers. We spotted Ian/Noddy several times. If you don’t know who he is, he’s fairly near the front of the crowd at the end of the programme and he’s wearing a green beanie hat.

The Board was wondering if we should have a change of uniform for the men. I spotted this male fashion design in the paper last week and think it would be ideal. Obviously, it would have to be in club colours but I think it would go down a storm!! I hope you agree!

More sad news, I’m afraid. Brian Partridge, Rona’s husband died earlier this week after a very short illness. He was a regular at the quizzes and social functions. Some time ago, he gave a very interesting talk on his days as an umpire at Wimbledon. He had been a keen tennis player in addition to his umpiring. He brought along some interesting memorabilia and photos from those days. Our condolences to Rona and family.

The numbers at the quiz this Saturday were down due mainly to folks being away on holiday but there were still about sixty. Steve Bluck had compiled a very varied quiz which was very well received. Like everything, unless you’ve tried to write a quiz and pitch it at the right sort of level so that it’s neither too hard nor too easy, you don’t really appreciate the time and effort involved. Well done, Steve.

As I said in the last newsletter, Howard will be hosting the next quiz on 16th July assisted by both Derek Thorpe and me. I hope you can come along – the sheet is already up for you to sign in order to reserve a table.

As usual, take care,

Linda.
