Newsletter Issue 97

Hi everyone,

What a few days! Even if you’re a republican, you surely couldn’t have failed to be impressed by how wonderfully we do these special occasions! I must admit that I hadn’t fully appreciated the enormity of the occasion of the platinum jubilee before the event. I had just taken for granted that I’d witnessed a silver, gold, diamond and now a platinum jubilee in my lifetime!

Although I don’t remember it, I’d even rolled about on the floor during the coronation muttering the plaintive words “I’m sick of the keem. I’m sick of the keem” having been subjected to hours upon hours of the coronation on our television purchased especially for the very grand occasion.

We celebrated in style at the club. The lounge area and Cooper Suite were decked out with balloons, bunting and Union Jack paper chains. The food table was heaving with festive food and the tables in the lounge were decorated with red, white, blue and Union Jack sprinkles. Everybody had made an attempt at wearing red, white and blue. The whole atmosphere was one of celebration and joy!

We are so fortunate to have the talents of Derek Thorpe who entertained us on the piano. He brought back so many memories of my Dad playing the old tunes (he wasn’t as accomplished as Derek but I used to enjoy not only listening to him but singing along as we did in those days). I mentioned the different titles to Derek that my Dad used to play and he instantly was able to reproduce them for me. It took me back so many years to happy childhood days.

The weather wasn’t kind to us but it didn’t matter. Everyone had come in the right frame of mind to enjoy whatever. Thank you to Lin and her team for all the hard work and effort – it really paid off. Thank you to everyone who worked hard to make a success of the day and, of course, to the folks who attended. Without you, it would have been a flop. Thank you.

The final work session on the lights takes place this coming Saturday, 11th June. The difference in the lighting is amazing! I hadn’t realised that the lighting was being changed in the ladies’ loos until I went in on Friday evening. I almost needed my sunglasses! You outdoor bowlers will notice such a difference when you return.

We are still set to host the refreshments on 12th June for the National Open Gardens despite the grotty forecast. It wasn’t good last time so we felt we were due for some more clement weather this year but I think that’s not to be. However, we’ll do our best to provide our usual standard of lovely cakes. We’ve had a number offered already but we could still do with a fair few more, please. Just let reception know if you intend to provide a lovely home-baked cake, please.

The first match of the new league of Australian Pairs takes place this Wednesday. I hope that all who are playing in the league have a great time. If you’re not playing, why not come along to watch. You may be tempted into forming a team for next summer season!

When the final figures have been released, I’ll announce just what we have made overall. I’m sure it was well worth it. It wasn’t about making lots of money; it was all about the celebration of the momentous occasion and enjoying ourselves which, I believe, we did in buckets.

Thank you again given all concerned in making out platinum jubilee afternoon a success.

Take care,

Linda.

Sorry. The last sentence should read; Thank you again to all concerned in making our platinum jubilee afternoon a success.
I wrote it rather late last night.

At the end of the Jubilee Party, Howard thanked all of the people who had been involved. However, I am afraid, no one had thanked Howard, who had also done a great job. So rather belatedly, I would like to say, on behalf of us all, ‘Well done Howard.’
