Newsletter Issue 58

Hello again,

It doesn’t seem long since I last wrote a newsletter but here I am again with yet another Bank Holiday approaching! And again the weather seems to have forgotten that it is a Bank Holiday – maybe it’s compensation for the tough time we’ve had over the last eighteen months!

I’ve been pleased to see a steady stream of outdoor summer bowlers filtering into the club to pick up their registration forms and, in some cases, to have a roll up. The pile in the boxes is definitely going down nicely.

That brings me onto the really good news that we have five more teams entered for the winter season. Unfortunately we lost one but the five new additions have more than covered that one loss. There is always room for more teams so, if you think you could find sufficient players to enter a new team, Steve Bluck is always happy to accommodate.

Of the registration forms returned so far, there have still not been many volunteering offers. PLEASE give it some thought. The catering team in particular are crying out for help. Please come forward if you think you could help in any way.

John Philbrick, Frank and Jill Skelton have been working very hard tending the grass and the grounds and sustaining many scratches in the process! They too need help. There are vacancies in the office rota and, if you’re at all handy, Graham Whiting would be pleased to have a chat with you. Don’t forget, this club is run mainly by volunteers!

Sadly I have to inform you of another death – Robin Beesley. Since I am relatively new to the club, I didn’t know him but apparently he was a very nice man. Our thoughts are with his family.

His son, Stuart, has provided details of his funeral. If you knew him and wish to pay your respects, there are now no restrictions on numbers attending but there are details of the on-line link too.

Robin’s funeral service has been arranged for Friday 3rd September 2021 at 10am

Place: Cheltenham Crematorium – Oak Chapel: Bouncers Lane, Cheltenham, GL52 5JT

There are two car parks. You need to follow the signs to the ‘New Crematorium’ and ignore the first car park you see which is for visitors to the Gardens of Remembrance.

This will be a celebration of Robin’s life.. As such, please feel free to wear colourful clothes (rather than sombre)…

There will also be a live broadcast you can watch if you cannot attend… The details are below. If you do use these, please test them in advance and let me know if you have any problems:

Live webcast: https://watch.obitus.com

User ID:            riya8740

Password:        870533

Flowers from family only please

However, if you would like to make a donation in Robin’s memory then you can donate via one of these two charity links:

https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/robin-beesley-alz
https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/robin-beesley-rnli

(or c/o Mason & Stokes Funeral Directors, Tudor Lodge, 54 Hewlett Road, Cheltenham, GL52 6AH)

There will be refreshments after the service. Details will be available on the day.

Please can you reply to me indicating whether you plan to attend, how many people in your group, and whether this is in person, or via the live broadcast only. Also, whether you would like to come for refreshments afterwards. If you can’t attend, it would be useful to know that too.. Many thanks.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Regards,

Rather than finish in a sombre tone, I am very happy announce the hugely popular quizzes are to resume in October. More information will be given nearer the time.

In the meantime, take care, and please think if you can be a volunteer for the Club.

Linda.
