Newsletter Issue 289 4/5/2026
Good grief!
Apparently some of you thought I was being serious about never making mistakes. I had hoped that the emoji would show that it was a joke but to be fair, my wife doesn’t get my sense of humour either.
It was actually a sneaky plan to get you to read the newsletter carefully in the hope of finding a mistake. So to try this a different way, can you find the mistake which I’ve put into this newsletter on purpose?
Let’s go.
Bowls stuff
The juniors aren’t our only England players. 29 year-old Ross Bolland plays for the England Learning Disabilities team.
On the 22nd and 23rd of April, he was playing for the Munro cup in the LDIBIS home international held at Leicester. (Learning Disabilities Indoor Bowls International Series).
Overall England lost to Scotland by an agonising single point with the final result being Scotland 26, England 25 and Wales 21. Well done Ross!
Those who play in my Monday & Thursday umbrellas will occasionally have the chance to play against an England player since I have an arrangement with his Mum to let him play in them once or twice a month. As an ex Special Needs teacher, I am able to help Ross to manage his temperament while he gets some useful practice. You might also spot him occasionally receiving coaching from an England coach at the club.
Youth Bowls
Not too long ago, I was playing in a match when someone fired and our jack split clean in half! Has that ever happened to you?
Anyway, since we all know how much the youngsters like to fire, it prompted me to ask them how many times they have seen or had jacks split like this.
Maybe we could start a competition amongst the juniors for how many jacks they’ve each destroyed.
Boring stuff
So your new Board held their first meeting last Thursday and it lasted nearly three hours! If you’d like to find out what we were up to please read the minutes which are filed close to Reception. I’m pleased to report that we elected the following:
Chairman Tony Letts
Finance Director Andy Williams
Office Services Director Liz Giles
Buildings & Grounds Director Mark Tester
Marketing & PR Director Vacant
Catering Director Vacant
Health & Safety Director Vacant
Rest assured that because the vacancies are such important items, we are all sharing those. This does mean that we are having to do more work so if you would like to join us just get in touch.
We are looking at ways of finding out your views but for now we are hoping to revive the use of the Suggestion box so please feel free to make use of that.
Social stuff.
Remember that Summer cribbage is now on alternate Wednesday mornings from10-12, with the next two being on being on Wednesday May 6th and 20th. I know of one person who’s going to go along to learn the game so if you fancy learning a new card game, why not join him?
The next quiz night is on Saturday, 16th May with Steve Bluck as your quizmaster. At £6 per person, £7 for non-members including a buffet this is incredible value. Enter on the notice board by reception.

200 club results for April were:
1st Prize £75 David Harris
2nd Prize £25 Derek Campbell

Getting to know you.

If you’re wondering why there isn’t a mini biography of a member this time, it’s because you didn’t send me one. You weren’t alone.
Don’t be shy, just email me your photo (headshot), with a brief summary of your life, interests, experiences and so on.
I expect plenty waiting when I return from holiday.
Alternatively, if your challenged with the technology, just tell me that you’re happy to do one and I’ll meet up in the club and take your photo etc.
Punny Ending
I’m a big fan of jokey puns and was toying with the the idea of ending with one every time. So try this one and let me know which of these was your reaction.
Did you know that deer can jump higher than the average sized house? It’s because of their incredibly strong hind legs and the fact that the average sized house can’t jump.
😄 or 🤔
In Closing…
Please remember that I’m off on holiday so the next Newsletter will be on Monday May 25th. After that, because things are quieter in the Summer, they will appear fortnightly, reverting to weekly in the Winter season.
Many thanks to those who have told me that they enjoyed my first newsletter. I’m always contactable at the email address below.
Cheerio,
Tony Letts
