Hello,
There’s quite a lot of information this week.
First of all, we played the Egham this morning against Solihull. We knew it would be a tough one, but although we lost, we didn’t disgrace ourselves. There were some lovely woods played and some very close ends. We’ll have to wait until next year now to give it another go.
On Saturday afternoon, it was this month’s session of bingo. The numbers were down from last month, but I think Christmas shopping took some folks away. However, we still made a profit, and a few lucky people came away with a heavier purse/wallet. That infernal machine seems fixed to miss my numbers!
The next session is on Sunday, 11th January, 3.00 – 5.00 p.m. Maybe I’ll be luckier?
The Christmas raffle will be drawn on 19th December. Maybe I’ll be lucky then. However, if I were to win a certain prize, it would go to Hattie (the fact that I don’t like the contents has nothing to do with it!)
This month’s quiz is on the following day, 20th December, when our quizmasters will be Fred Croxton and Harold Grouse. I believe it’s not particularly a Christmas quiz, but you can, of course, wear a Christmas jumper if you feel so inclined.
Sunday, 21st is the day of fun bowling followed by a two-course Christmas meal when you can wear a Christmas jumper or dress up in your sparkles – entirely up to you.
PLEASE NOTE: THIS WEDNESDAY, 17th DECEMBER, is the LAST DAY for buying tickets for this event!
A reminder from Elly Underhill – If you’re coming to the Friday morning umbrella, please wear something Christmassy and, if you’d like to contribute some festive nibbles to have after, they’d be very welcome. Hopefully you will stay and have a coffee/tea and a bite to eat. I dare say, if you’re not driving, you could have something stronger!
While I’m on the subject of stronger beverages, we are now stocking full bottles of white, rosé and red wine for £14.00 per bottle. The large bottles hold the equivalent of four of the small bottles, so it’s a saving if you’re having a boozy night. They will be on sale from this Saturday (i.e. the quiz night).
On Friday, 2nd January, the ladies are playing the third round of the Mason Trophy (one rink at home and one away) against Malvern.
The following day, the men are playing the area final of the Denny Cup against Huntingdon (Nicky Brett plays there, just saying) on a neutral green, at 11.30 at Daventry. Another tough one! We wish them luck.
This is a BIG ONE!
WORLD BOWLS 2026

9th January at 3:45 pm…

Provided we can get it on the screen at the club, it will be broadcast on YouTube for us all to watch.
If Fin and Ryan win this match, they go on to play Paul Foster and Alex Marshall on Sunday at 9.30 a.m. Again, it will be on at the club, provided we can get it on our screen (which is temperamental).
Whatever the outcome, huge congratulations to Fin (and Ryan, although he’s from a different club)!
Last year, the players were complaining about the rink. This year, it is a new portable rink, so the runs will be new for everyone. The portable rink plays very differently from the normal club rinks and is much shorter.
Fin was telling me today that they are guaranteed just 2 half-hour roll-ups before the day and one half-hour before the actual game. He also told me their entry music, but I’ll leave that as a surprise.
I suggested that I would choose “ Things Can Only Get Better”!
TORQUAY
Those of you who are going to Torquay, there is a sheet in the office to specify the sort of room you would like and any requests (e.g. ground floor, etc.). The balance is required by 31st January.
And finally, our next OPEN DAY will be held on SATURDAY 17th JANUARY 2026 between 10.00 a.m. and 4.00 p.m.
Dave Giles will be asking for volunteers in due course.
May Howard and I take the opportunity to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and a healthy New Year.

Take care,
Linda.
Linda Watkin-Jones.
