Newsletter Issue 263

Hello again,

I hope you all enjoyed the extra hour in bed (that’s if you remembered to put the clocks back an hour)! Looks like the cooler weather has finally hit. There was frost on my windscreen on Friday morning – the first time this year.

On Wednesday afternoon, the first of the friendlies for this season took place against GCIBA. Although three MidGlos rinks won, overall GCIBA came out the victors with a score of 125/92. Compliments to both the catering staff who produced a lovely meal and to the volunteers.

Yesterday, MidGlos were away to Bristol, which was another disappointing loss – 128/68. Let’s hope that the next friendly against Gloucester on Saturday, 8th November, goes better.

Incidentally, Cath has noted that there is a lack of names going up on the board to play in the friendlies. If numbers continue to decline, Cath will have to consider having fewer rinks, which would be a shame. The friendlies are a valuable source of income for the club. Fewer players lead to fewer rinks and less money! Come on, support your club!

Yesterday morning, Wessex A were playing Wessex B. Apart from one rink, which got off to a good start for the A team, the other rinks were pretty close, although the A team won all four rinks in the end. It really was a good match to watch. I wish both teams well this season.

Today, it was Top Club against Carterton (a strong team) and, true to form, it proved to be a tough game. However, both the 2 Wood singles and the mixed Pairs won their games. Unfortunately, the Trips and Fours weren’t able to join them. Sadly, we’re now out of Top Club for this year.

Next week, MidGlos is playing Olveston on Wednesday evening in the Interclub, and on Saturday, both the Denny and the Yetton are being played (two rinks at home and two away) at 10.00 a.m.

On Sunday, the first round of the Egham Trophy takes place at 10.00 a.m. against Carterton again.

As usual, spectators are welcome at all of these National matches.

Don’t forget that the closing date for entries into the club competitions ends on Friday this week (31st October). Get your forms along with the entry fees in at reception.

Although Potters have stopped their roadshows, Mark Royle, who used to do their roadshows, now does it under the name of “Jack’n’Bowls” and he is coming to us on Monday, 1st December, from 10.30 a.m. into the evening. This is open to everyone. It’s just in time to buy all your bowling needs, ready for Christmas. Come along and tell others about it.

Bingo

Thanks to Amanda for arranging it, to Mark Tester for calling and to Derek May for lending us the Bingo machine and, of course, to everyone who came along.

Eyes down – look in!

36 people attended our first bingo session, and it went extremely well. In fact, when asked if more Bingo sessions were wanted, all said yes!
How often – monthly was the reply, and 3-5 pm suited everyone just fine – phew!!
Prizes were £8 for a line and £20 for a full house, based on the number of attendees; however, the more attendees, the greater the prize money!!
The last game was a straight full house with £32 being the winning prize!

Raffle was well supported, and the bar takings exceeded expectations for a Sunday afternoon – I will refrain from commenting!!

I would like to thank those individuals who helped make this Bingo session so enjoyable:- David, Mark, Jill, Anne and Noddy, and to all the members who attended.

Future dates are as follows:-
