Hello again from an even hotter and sunny Chedworth,

In my younger days, I would have loved this weather and I never thought I’d be agreeing with the (as I believed then, “miserable” older people) but I’m afraid I’ve reached the age when I’m finding it too hot. The humidity is exhausting. How the tennis players perform in this heat is beyond me. Here’s hoping that today’s final proves to be exciting.

Last winter, Geoff Underhill managed to get an Australian Pairs League going on a Wednesday morning to run alongside the fours league played on that morning. He’d like to do the same again this year. If you’d like to play in one of his teams, please message him or you can of course put in a team of your own. To cover holidays and illness, you really need a team of five, four at an absolute minimum.

I’m delighted to announce that we now have a sponsor based in Cheltenham – Tivoli Legal. Their contribution will cover the cost of new score sheets which will bear their logo and that of the financial advisor with whom they work closely. Two banners will soon be erected on the end wall either side of the main scoreboard.

Last week I mentioned that the file for team registrations would be available at reception. Please remember to fill it in if you are a captain with the team name – morning, afternoon or evening, your contact details and signature. New teams are more than welcome, particularly in the afternoons.

I know of at least one person who is retired and was put off joining because he likes a lie-in in the morning. Let’s try to boost the afternoon teams for those who like to wait until the streets are warmer so avoiding the early morning chill and the busier traffic.

On Friday evening, it was lovely to see the return of two of our younger, very talented players, Tom Evans and Fin Williamson who were playing against each other in a National Singles game. It was a very close game which ended 21/20 to Fin. All along, it could have gone either way, particularly when it reached 20/20. Well played both!

The next quiz is this coming Saturday, 19th July when the quizmaster will be Sheila Kingswell. On the evening, you will be asked to fill out a small questionnaire (nothing too scary!).

And finally, I have to finish with some sad news. Jan Gavaron died last Thursday after a short illness. For some time, she’d been struggling but, after diagnosis, the end came rather quickly. Our heartfelt condolences to Bruce and Layla and any other family and friends. We hope to welcome both Bruce and Layla back at the club when they are ready.

Take care everyone,

Linda.
