Newsletter Issue 242

Hello again,

A sad week, I’m afraid – we’ve lost two members this week – Campbell McColl on Thursday afternoon and Dave Coates on Friday.

Campbell has suffered for a long time with breathing difficulties but, for almost a year, he’d been confined to the house.

Prior to that, he still managed to bowl (very well I might add. We played together on a Monday evening. He would play two to me. I could rely on him to back me up or get closer to the jack than I did) carrying his oxygen cylinder on his back.

He was the “life and soul” of the party with a wicked twinkle in his eye. He ran and played in a few teams amongst other things and organised the very successful and enjoyable Wednesday night Interclub.

Latterly, when he found the bowling too much, he was our regular “office boy” helping out behind the scenes in the office. He will indeed be missed by so many people especially at Cheltenham BC and MidGlos. But, above all by Margaret and his wider family and close friends. Our sincere condolences. He was indeed a great guy.

Unfortunately I don’t have a photo of Dave. He again was a lovely man who has struggled this last year. He used to go to the hospital regularly to have blood transfusions but, on Tuesday he was given the devastating news that he’d come to the end of the line.

He has looked so frail for months now but he has battled on, still bowling when appointments allowed and still attending the Whist evenings. In fact, he was bowling a fortnight ago but had to stop towards the end because he wasn’t feeling too well. However, he was at Whist a week last Friday. What a fighter who remained cheerful to the end.

Again our condolences to his wife, family and friends. He too will be missed.

When several of us were in Torquay, on the Saturday, a markers’ course was held. One of the attendees is the Groups Coordinator for the Cheltenham U3A which has over 2000 members.

He’d like to have a reciprocal arrangement with MidGlos whereby we advertise U3A and he does the same for MidGlos. He would also be interested in a taster session towards the end of June. I believe there was a group from U3A who used to bowl at our club on a regular basis. It would be nice if we could get this going again.

The Cheltenham U3A Open Day this year is on Wednesday, 11th June, 10.30 until 14.00 at St. Matthews Church, Cheltenham GL50 3PL opposite the Central Library.

Why not drop in and see what they have to offer?

I mentioned last week that the sign up sheet for the quiz would no longer be going up on the night of the quiz.

In addition, from September, there will be a charge of an additional £3.00 for non members provided a member of their party is a member. However, if you wish to attend all of the quizzes, it is cheaper to become a social member at just £30.00 per annum.

The same applies to the attendees of Whist and Keezen.

I think that’s all for this week. Take care and keep well,

Linda.
