Newsletter Issue 202

Hello,

Although I said that there wouldn’t be a newsletter this week, here I am. As a result of the Board meeting held earlier today (Friday), there are too many items which need to be covered sooner than in a week’s time.

The first sad thing to have to announce is the death of Bryan White a week ago. He was soon to be 92. Until recently he was still bowling but had to stop since he could no longer pass the eyesight test required to drive. He was a true gentleman and an excellent bowler to the end. Latterly, he played in my teams where I could confidently place him in any position. For several years he held the role of Finance Director and, in that position, played a very important part in the transfer from The Dones to our present location. His funeral arrangements will be announced as soon as they are known.

Having asked for any news of our members who bowl outdoors in the summer, I received the following information:
Babz Clarke and Anne Hesling were part of the Glos City team who reached the county finals of the Tony Alcock Trophy being beaten by Kingswood and Hanham at Bradley Stoke. They also reached the last 32 of Bowls England Top Club playing Worcestershire at Bredon BC. Well done ladies.
Babz Clarke is also going to Leamington again with Glos City BC women’s fours. Well done again and good luck.

Last week I drew your attention to the notice on the board re. the match at Cheltenham BC on Monday, 12th August at 2.00p.m..Several people have missed it. It is where the friendly matches are advertised. Please tick your name if you are still available. I could still do with a couple more reserves just in case someone pulls out at the last minute. Why not come along and watch us getting trounced?!

Last winter season, as well as the fours league played on Tuesday evenings, we had an open pairs league on the remaining free rinks. We would like to repeat it this year. If you’re interested in putting in a team, please get in touch with Steve Bluck. It is very good practice since you get to bowl four woods rather than two or three.

Geoff Underhill is hoping to get enough teams to be able to run an Australian Pairs League alongside the fours league on Wednesday mornings at 10.00. Steve Bluck has sent out an email explaining the format. Please get in touch with Geoff on: 07833 364679

Is anyone from “Saracens” willing to take over the running on Monday evenings at 7.00p.m.? If so, please get in touch with Steve Bluck.

Graham Whiting has asked for volunteers for a couple of working parties to help mend the lean to roof at the side of the club and to do some internal painting where necessary. Please get in touch with Graham or the office.
Many thanks.

If you are willing to train to become a first aider at the club, again could you get in touch with Steve Hancock or the office? The more people we have, the cheaper the cost will be to the club to run a course.

Angela Holbrook is looking to fill several gaps in her office volunteers rota.
The following slots need to be filled:
Monday, 3.30p.m. to buddy with Fred Croxton
Tuesday, 1.00p.m. to buddy with Bob Knight
Tuesday, 6.00p.m. to buddy with Richard Eeles
Wednesday, 6.00p.m. – 2 people required
Thursday, 1.00p.m. to buddy with Carlo
Thursday, 6.00p.m. to buddy with Angela
Friday, 1.00p.m. to buddy with Stan Lister
Friday, 3.30p.m. to buddy with Alan Martin

Please get in touch with Angela or the office. Without volunteers to man these positions, it’s difficult to run the leagues. Please help out if you can spare a couple of hours. Full training will be given.

The position of Club Secretary is still vacant. Kath is our Company Secretary but we still need a Club Secretary since Angela stepped down to take over the office. The Club Secretary sends out the agenda, takes the minutes at and attends the Bowling Committee meetings. Again, please see Angela or anyone in the office who will direct you to Kath or Angela.

We will be holding an Open Day between 11.00a.m. and 4.00p.m. on Thursday, 12th September. If you know of anyone interested in coming along, please pass on the information. If you are an outside bowler finding the going a bit hard, why not move indoors where you don’t need quite the muscle power or waterproofs?! Woods and shoes can be provided and there will be coaches on hand. Tea/coffee and biscuits will be served.

I believe that the Potters Shop will be at the Club on Thursday, 26th September. This has proved very popular in the past. It is open to everyone not only our members. Again, pass on the word to anyone who may be interested. I will confirm nearer the time in case Potters has changed the date.

There is a lot of information to take in. Please make sure that you don’t miss anything so have another read and try to help out where you can.

Many thanks.
Take care,

Linda
