Newsletter Issue 101

Hello everyone,

American Independence Day! We’re not American but it was the birthday of one of our former dogs!

There nearly wasn’t a newsletter this week – I’ve been SO busy at Wimbledon! I’ve played every match so far. I’m an avid fan. Everything stops for a fortnight apart from my bowling matches. I just love it! I only wish I could play bowls like the tennis players execute their game.

If you’re playing this Wednesday, take care since the carpet in the foyer is being taken up and the tables and chairs in the lounge area need to be moved out since that carpet is being cleaned on Thursday. The new carpet is also being fitted on Thursday. If you’re playing on Wednesday, it would be a great help if you could lend a hand in moving the furniture.

On 19th July, members of a school on the Abbeymead estate are coming in with their teachers and carers (there are a couple who need wheelchairs – they will, of course, use ours when playing) to have a go at bowling. They are studying the Commonwealth Games and are trying out all the sports represented in the Games.

Although the sport played is outdoor bowls, it was felt that it would be better played indoors in case the weather was inclement. I believe that Sandy Kerr, Shirley Cromie and Howard will be leading the session. Let’s hope the pupils enjoy it and maybe one or two could be interested enough to pursue it further.

I mentioned last week that there is a short mat competition being played on 21st August. There will be some impressive bowling to watch. Spectators are welcome and sausage / bacon baps are available 8:30 – 11am.

I’m still on the lookout for a suitable ladies’ uniform to match the very fetching male outfit cited in one of the previous newsletters. There was one in this week-end’s newspaper which almost fitted the bill but it wasn’t quite right so the search continues.

I’ll keep you informed. In the meantime, it’s back to the tennis.

Take care,

Linda.
