Newsletter Issue 100!

Hello everyone,

Here we are – our 100th issue and not much to announce!

We’ve had a busy few days this week-end since our daughter, son-in-law and granddaughters from Guildford have been visiting but I really thought I should make the effort to write the newsletter since we’ve reached such a milestone!

Because they didn’t arrive until Saturday afternoon, we were able to attend the Friday evening umbrella. It was a different format since we played to wherever the jack landed i.e. no centring the jack. Howard and I love playing to an off-centre jack since that is what we’re used to playing (when we played crown green). However, it can really throw people who’re used to looking for markers to aim at. It’s great practice to get to know the curve of your wood. I think everyone enjoyed it – there was certainly a lot of banter which is great.

The regular “short matters” were there too and they are so appreciative of the new lights that they donated a cheque towards the cost. Many thanks. Derek Thorpe brought along his son, Richard who is visiting from Australia. He was very impressed with our facilities and really enjoyed his evening with us. He’s not a bowler but he took to it like a duck to water. Incidentally, there was no mistaking that he is Derek’s son – he’s the absolute spit! And such a great bloke – he integrated so well.

Those of you who’ve been to the club recently will have noticed that the foyer carpet has three white sticky stripes drawing attention to the fact that it’s badly rippled and dangerous. The new carpet is on order and will be fitted early in July.

On Sunday, 21st August, we will be hosting a short mat competition which will attract quite a number of people. We will be serving bacon and sausage baps and manning the bar for them. All of this will bring in some welcome revenue for us so it’s well worth doing.

Don’t forget to get your names down for the next quiz on 16th July if you haven’t already done so – your quiz master is Howard aided by Derek on the piano – a quiz with a difference. Enjoy! See you there.

Until then, take care as usual,

Linda.
