Hello,

Wow! What a final to World Bowls. Based on his performance leading up to the final, I had tipped Paul Foster to win but Rob Paxton proved me wrong. During the years that I have been following the tournament, I have never seen such a close final.

Enough of World Bowls! Nearer to home Simon Burke has some brilliant news about our young members:

“Wow, what a great week for the U18s and U25s Gloucestershire team!

First on 18th we had our Gloucestershire U18s team play at Clarrie Dunbar. Both rinks were made up of players from MidGlos. The first rink consisted of Hattie Burke, Louie Hodges and Dylan Williamson. This rink had a very exciting game with the team, at one point, down 9-20. However, with great determination and mental attitude, they came back to 20-20 to finish 20-22 – an absolutely honourable second place.

The other rink made up of Jack Speller, Erin Burke and Josh Hodges won 15-12. This rink was confidently ahead while the other rink was making their comeback. They kept their heads and carried on powering through with their comfortable lead.

Overall, our U18s ended up with a nail biting win of 35-34 against a strong and valiant Dorset side.

Similarly, on Saturday, 24th, our Gloucestershire U25s squad took on a strong Warwickshire team. Jack Speller, Emily Burke, Dylan and Finley Williamson were at home. The first half was a real dog fight with Warwickshire’s No.3 having a wonderful game and causing lots of problems.

None the less, they pulled together as a team and came back strong in the second half to overtake the opposition to win 23-19. This score really showed how hard they fought against a strong Warwickshire rink to get themselves over the line.

Our away rink was Hattie and Erin Burke, Louie and Josh Hodges. They achieved a great win of 24-15. With a great team performance from the off, they gained a strong lead which lasted throughout the game.

Overall, these two rinks showed maturity well beyond their years as the average age of the team was just 16.

I would just like to say thank you to Sophie Guy and Jake Burlow, our other team members, and a massive well done to our Gloucestershire team.

Roll on the next game which will be for U18s on 8th February against Somerset.”

I would just like to endorse my praise to our youngsters. They really are an asset to MidGlos. We are so proud of all of you.

On Sunday, our Wessex A and B teams were in action against Cotswold B and A respectively. Our A team came out on top while our B team came second.

Going back to last week in the friendly against Cheltenham, MidGlos won 120-79. A good win!

The next friendly is against Welford at home on 1st February followed by Cotswold at home on 8th February. The team sheets are up on the board now. Please sign up if you’re available.

Our “Burns Night” took place on Sunday afternoon into the early evening. Amanda and David Hanks had worked very hard on this event which was enjoyed by everyone. Gill and Roger had devised a tricky few rounds of fun bowls. This was followed by a short Scottish-themed quiz and a tasty meal. Chris Frusher and Jill Whiting provided haggis or shepherds pie with vegetables and Lin Brighty had made the dessert of cranachan. We toasted the haggis which had been stabbed by Derek May (in a very striking outfit) with whisky. Other drinks were served by Greg Marsh.

All in all, it was a very successful event. Amanda is suggesting that we do a live music and food night towards the end of the winter season.

A gentle reminder that if you are yet to pay the balance for the Torquay trip, it is due by the end of this week, please.

In the meantime, keep checking all the noticeboards for information.

Take care everyone,

Linda.
