NEWSLETTER 274. 12th January 2026

Hello,

First of all, I have to apologise to Erin Burke who was a travelling reserve this week-end for the Mixed U18s International Series up at Cumbernauld IBC in Scotland. I got my information from the EIBA site which omitted Erin’s name. I haven’t heard how they got on yet or if Erin played. I just hope that their journey wasn’t too bad in view of the very snowy conditions.

I hope you all watched Fin and Ryan’s match on Friday and again this morning against Paul Foster and Alex Marshall. They very nearly tied on the first set losing out 10/11 on the last end. However, they lost overall but they certainly put up a good showing. I don’t think it will be the last time we see them play at Potters in World Bowls. They should be very pleased with themselves. I think I speak for the whole club when I say that we’re very proud of Fin. Well done!

On Wednesday 12.30 – 13.30, the first yoga session took place. I did yoga for many years but had to give up since the lesson timing clashed with one of my crown green leagues. This was the ideal opportunity for me to give it a go again.

I was surprised and delighted to find that I am still quite supple after all the years away from it.

The instructor, Nicky, is very good and we all thoroughly enjoyed the session. I’ll definitely be a regular now. Why not come along and have a try. It is so beneficial for the whole body and mind. You work at your own pace – you’re not expected to do very challenging things if you’re not up to it. Unlike bowling, it’s not a competition!

The friendly against GL1 took place straight afterwards with MidGlos winning 105/99. Well done. A close match. Cath wishes to thank those who played at short notice in order to make up the numbers. The next friendly is on Sunday, 18th January against Cheltenham.

On Saturday there was a county game with a hot meal afterwards (hard work for the catering and bar staff – all volunteers). The catering and bar staff would like to thank Steve Abbott who, once again, bought them all a drink.

It was the latest session of Bingo this afternoon. It certainly pays to volunteer to work behind the bar! One person who was behind the bar virtually cleaned out all the available winnings. Needless to say, all the wrong numbers came out for me just as happens in the 200 Club!

This coming Saturday, 17th is our next open day – 10.00a.m. until 4.00p.m. There is a list at reception to sign if you can spare some time to help in any way.

In the evening, it is the monthly quiz which is fun and always well supported.

On the following day starting at 10.00a.m. Wessex A are playing Carterton and Wessex B are playing Chipping Norton. Bacon and sausage baps will be on sale.

Despite the dreary weather at the moment, it is nice to notice that the days are indeed lengthening. Spring is on the horizon. We have snowdrops out and I’ve seen daffodils in bloom in one garden in the village. Ours are not quite at that stage yet.

It’s nice to finish on an optimistic note. Take care,

Linda.
