The sad news first, I’m afraid. A former MidGlos member, Jim Lee who was in a care home has died. Funeral arrangements to follow when we have details. I didn’t know him but I’m told that he was a lovely chap who was very quiet but also very friendly. He joined the club at the same time as John Williams, John White and quite a few others and were in John Williams’s team, the Mentors. This team is still going today and run by Sheila Kingswell. Our condolences to his wife, Jo and his family and friends. I have been asked again to mention the use of Grippo and the like both on your woods or hands. Marks are appearing on the carpet in various places. No food or drink is allowed on the rinks – not even water. Most of us drink water during a game but sips are taken off the rinks which is fine, of course. To replace the carpet is very expensive! PLEASE RESPECT IT! There is a notice up at reception reminding everyone that you must register at reception. This is a fire regulation. We MUST know who is in the building for your own safety. The friendly between MidGlos and Bristol away on Saturday was cancelled because Bristol were unable to raise a team. Disappointing for those who’d signed up. However, Wednesday’s friendly is still going ahead at home against GCIBA at 2.00p.m. Unfortunately, the Magician’s Evening is also cancelled due to lack of support. Chris and Jenny Brooker were hoping to raise money for the Bowel Cancer Charity since a family member has been treated successfully after a long and gruelling road. Each week, the supporters of the Friday evening umbrella donate a small amount into a kitty so that every so often we can have a little get together with food and a drink after bowling. Since it fell on Breast Cancer Awareness Day this time, we collected as usual but the money will go to that charity. Because it also coincided with a Whist night and coaching, Amanda did the rounds of those people too and that really boosted the coffers. Thank you to everyone who donated. We raised a very healthy sum of £155.60 which will go to the charity. In last week’s newsletter, I mentioned that six of our U18s had been selected to go to the U18 International trials in Northampton last Sunday. We heard on Friday that four of them have indeed been selected to join the squad. Huge congratulations to Josh and Louie Hodges and Dylan and Fin Williamson! Wow! What an achievement! And SO good for the club to have four representatives from the same club. You are really putting the MidGlos name out there. We wish you all the very best for the future. You are our future! So proud of you. Keep me informed and I’ll shout about it here and Dave Giles will do the same on Facebook. The first of the Egham matches is being played this evening (Sunday) against Cotswold at 6.00pm – two rinks at home and two away. I’ll announce the results here when I get back from Cotswold. Back home at 10.47. Overall we won by 18 shots and now go on to play Malvern on 3rd November. Next Sunday is the next round of Top Club at 10.00a.m. at home against Oxford City and County. Again spectators are very welcome. Steve Bluck delivered a very good quiz again on Saturday evening. There was a tie at the end which necessitated a tie-break question. This doesn’t very often happen so it was just as well that Steve had one prepared. The next quiz will be hosted by Jill and Graham Whiting followed by the Christmas quiz in December hosted by Sheila. Can’t believe we’re at that stage again! Get those Christmas jumpers dusted off! In the meantime, take care. Linda. Linda Watkin-Jones. Director (PR & Marketing). |
