What a busy week-end! On Friday evening, the first round of the U18s open singles took place at MidGlos against Carterton. Two of the three boys will continue to the next round but, sadly one lost on the last end of the tiebreak having fought a very good match. On Saturday morning the preliminary round of Top Club was played against Cotswold at MidGlos. I’m pleased to announce that MidGlos won – 10-6. The next round is on Sunday, 27th October at home against Oxford City & County. Thank you to Rich Shergold and Fin Williamson for organising it and to Jill Whiting for coming in to provide tea, coffee and biscuits. Well done to all who took part. Thank you too to our spectators. Six of our Under 18s have been selected to enter the EIBA trials for the International team. Congratulations to Fin, Dylan, Josh, Louie, Erin and Hattie. This took place today (Sunday) at Northampton and District IBA Bowls Club. This is a huge accolade for our youngsters and for MidGlos. To have six people selected from one club is very impressive. We still have a number of office vacancies to be filled: Monday – 13.00 to 15.30 to buddy with Sheila Kingswell Monday – 15.30 to 18.00 to buddy with Fred Croxton Monday – 18.00 to close to buddy with Angela Holbrook Incidentally Kath is now doing a shift and she has had to pay for her son, Lathan to become a social member so that he can help out on the desk. Angela is doing far more than her fair share of duties because nobody else has come forward to volunteer. Full training is given by Angela. You will not be thrown in at the deep end. Please have another think about stepping up. Unfortunately, Graham Whiting has stepped down from the Board for personal reasons. He is still happy to help out where he can for which we are very grateful. It will be a real loss to lose him from the Board. He’s done an excellent job but his personal reasons have to come first. Thank you, Graham. If anyone feels they would like to fill his place, then please come forward. Whilst on the subject of Board members, I have to remind you that most of the present Board will be stepping down this April. We have served five years and feel it’s time for some new blood to come on board. Please give it some real thought. I’m giving you a “heads up” now so that you will be prepared when the time comes to put your names forward for consideration. In the meantime, you can speak to any of the present Board to get an insight into the requirements. Steve Bluck has asked me to mention that the Wednesday evening Interclub League (this season comprising 9 teams) commences on Wednesday, 16th October. The Tuesday evening pairs league starts on Tuesday, 22nd October. The Bowls Committee have a number of requests: < >Please use the cloakrooms or coat stands to hang up your coat or deposit your bag(s). There is no need for bowls bags/coats to be on chairs, tables or step off space near the rinks. It is felt that keys left hanging from lockers are a hazard. They should be stored in the locker with the door closed or in your pocket. If you use a ramp or box to access the rinks, please ensure that they are returned to their designated spots. There is a proposal that, if you have a match, you should not roll up beforehand (no matter which rink). It is felt that this could give an unfair advantage. It is also felt that issues or complaints should be raised in writing. I stress that the five points above have come from the Bowls Committee, not the Board. Any member of the Board is happy to talk over any issues or complaints. This coming Saturday, 19th is the next of our very popular quiz nights and, on Sunday evening at 6.00p.m. the first round of the Egham takes place against Cotswold with two rinks at home and two away. Supporters are very welcome. More tickets for the magician’s evening have been sold recently but, for it to be viable, we need at least 50 tickets to be sold. Otherwise, the evening will have to be cancelled which would be a shame since it is for such a worthwhile cause. Please check your availability, buy your ticket(s) and enter it in your diary/calendar/phone/back of your hand/wherever. That’s all for this week. Take care, Linda. Linda Watkin-Jones.
