Hello everyone,
I’ll start with the sad news. I have to report another death. Jim Clifford died on 4th February.
He was a lovely, gentle man who had been ill for quite a time. His wife died a couple of years ago. He missed her dreadfully. Initially he used to come to the club just to watch and be in the company of friendly faces. However, after the lockdowns, he stopped coming. So sad to lose yet another lovely man. Our condolences to his family and friends.
And now the bad news. I didn’t have the results of the friendly against Welford last week. It was a shocker. MidGlos won only one rink and so lost heavily. Never mind, we can’t win them all. Let’s hope we achieved a better result in the friendly against Cotswold.
BUT, we do have some really good news. Our men’s A team were playing the Denny Plate semifinal against Isle of Wight at Loddon Vale on Saturday morning. It was a nail biting match. Going into the last end, we were just four shots ahead so it could have gone either way. Thankfully, we gained one more shot to come out victorious with a score of 86/81. Huge congratulations to the team.
This now means that we are through to the final to be played at Nottingham at 3.00p.m. against Cumbria on 15th April. Apparently Cumbria has won the main Denny Cup competition ten times, but they’ve never come across MidGlos before!! Fingers crossed that we can knock them off their pedestal 🤞
On Sunday morning, our Wessex B team was playing Carterton A. They lost but, most importantly, Stan Lister’s rink won. This puts us second in the table ahead of Carterton with just one game to go against Cotswold A on 26th February. That match will be an exciting one to watch. Please come to support our team.
Keep your eyes on the board by reception for a notice going up if you wish to support the Denny Plate team in Nottingham. They deserve supporters. To win this would be a real feather in MidGlos’s cap. Just by playing in the final irrespective of the results puts MidGlos on the map!
It was another busy quiz night on Saturday with twenty teams taking part, a total of more than ninety people. The next one is on 18th March when your hostess will be Sheila Kingswell assisted by Norman Hancock. The notice is up on the board. Please sign up quickly as it fills up in no time.
Isn’t it lovely to see the days lengthening. Despite all the bad news, this means that spring and warmer weather hopefully are on their way.
On that happy note, I’ll sign off.
Take care,
Linda
